Back in the 1950s, the magazine of choice for men was the adventure magazine.
The pages of these magazines were generally filled with “true” (typically fictionalized or embellished) stories of war, survival, crime, safari, and the Old West. A favourite theme was the showdown between man and wild flesh-eating beasts and critters or men rescuing women from the torture of savage natives or cruel enemy armies.
The showpiece of these magazines was definitely the front covers.
