The world of video games has become like the world of Hollywood, with massive revenue matched only by ever increasing budgets.

Although it could be argued that “Halo 3” is the very definition of a mediocre shooter, there was nothing pedestrian about the blank check Microsoft wrote to develop the game. Good or bad, with the help of a truly massive marketing campaign, “Halo 3” became one of the biggest-selling video games of all time.
MGS4 didn’t break any records, but it was the Playstation 3’s biggest-selling exclusive title. Its massive price tag bought some impressive visuals, but with hours of lengthy cut scenes and a baffling story, they should have hired an editor.
One of the first games to use a production model based on filmmaking, 2000’s “Shenmue” had a budget to match. Developed for the doomed Dreamcast system, it had little chance of making a profit even if it had been met with an overwhelmingly positive critical response instead of a lukewarm one.
After languishing in a development hell that spanned multiple platforms and nearly ten years, “Too Human” racked up one of the biggest budgets in video game history by its 2008 release. Unfortunately for developer Silicon Knights, the resulting game was utterly forgettable, making it the “Heaven’s Gate” of video games.
From the massive cityscape based on New York City to the thousands of songs licensed for the in-game radio stations to the intricate, Scorcese-esque story, everything about this 2008 blockbuster - especially its rumoured budget - feels big. "GTA4" cemented Rockstar Games’ status as a hit maker with few peers.
